Why Lecce?
Why Lecce? Lecce is known as the “Florence of the South”. Be glad that’s not true. Yes, Lecce is a real cultural metropolis. But Lecce does not have the historical influence of Florence. Above all, Lecce has far fewer visitors. There is tourism (and good deals) but Lecce remains an authentic, beautiful city of indulgence in a prime location. Lecce is vibrant. And as a guest you can immerse yourself in the fun-loving dolce vita of the young city with around 100,000 inhabitants within baroque walls.
Embark on the classic evening stroll through the city, enjoy Italian specialties in fantastic restaurants (slow food is celebrated in Lecce) such as “Vico dei Sotteranei” or browse through owner-managed, original shops and boutiques.
How about culture? While in other tourist places overpriced “4-season concerts” are sold, in Lecce you can take part in the cultural program of the locals. And that is diverse! Last but not least, the students from the University of Salento ensure young life (and a wide bar scene). Or would you like to get right into the heart of the Italian emotions? Then go to a soccer match of the second division team US Lecce!
Activate yourself. Apulia is a cycling region. You will find plenty of rental stations and can easily cycle through the low-traffic city center or on cycle paths to the sea.
And then, of course, the sea. Either you do it like the people of Lecce and take the local bus line to the local beach of Lecce (San Cataldo) or you rent a car and drive to one of the Apulian dream beaches within a maximum of 40 minutes. Don’t know which beach is the prettiest? This is of course a matter of taste, but here are a few specific tips from us: L’Ultima spiaggia (natural reserve le Cesine); Lido La Castellana, (Otranto); Coco Loco, Torre Mozza (ugento) or Lido degli Angeli (Torre Lapillo).
The sea in the neighborhood, fun-loving culture in the heart – no city can offer more enjoyment than Lecce!
